FRENCH DECORATIVE CLOCKS
Dubois and Vion
 A rare French clock from the early years of Louis XVI's reign.
An obelisk in white marble and gilt bronze, the movement signed David Frederic Dubois, a famous Paris maker established in the Rue Saint- Honore. He sold very high quality clocks in cases by Vion, Viollet and B. Lieutaud.
This example is by Francois Vion (1764-1800) and probably dates from 1776.
The clock has a circular movement with verge escapement and strikes the hour and half hour on a bell. It repeats the hours on demand. The clock stands 50.5 cm high ( 1' 8" high) and is from the collection of Baroness Gabrielle Bentinck Thyssen. ( Price Band: D - Ref: FR1)
Vauchez and VionA fine French gilt bronze mantel clock by Daniel Vauchez, 1775 with the bronze work attributed to Francois Vion. The case depicts the triumph of France, the cockerel, over death in the form of Hermes. Twin train movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell.
This clock is illustrated in Tardy's Dictionary of French Clocks, and is a particularly good original example.

C.E.Mathieu
A high quality French mantel clock by C. E. Mathieu, Paris 1790. The case is in white marble with gilt bronze mounts and the figures of Venus and Cupid surmount the clock. The twin train movement strikes the hours and half hours on a bell. An example of this clock is in the Royal collection. Height: 34 cm. (13.5") (Price Band: B - Ref: FR3)
Thomas Pierce, Paris
A French mantel clock signed Thomas Pierce, Paris and dating from around 1850. The gilt bronze case depicts a reclining maiden with her lute and the porcelain inserts are Sevres style hand painted plaques, signed on the reverse. Twin train movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell. Height: 30 cm. (12") Width: 53 cm. (21")
